Resident Return Visa
Five Year Resident Return visa (subclass 155)

For current or former Australian permanent residents, or former Australian citizens to travel overseas and return as permanent residents.

The purpose of this visa is to allow current or former Australian permanent residents, or former Australian citizens to re-enter Australia after travelling overseas. This visa will allow you to maintain your status as an Australian permanent resident on your return to Australia.

Important: You are advised to apply for this visa before you leave Australia.

Current or former Australian permanent residents may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship.

Australian citizenship by grant

This option is for you if you are a:

 

Australian citizenship by descent

You may be eligible to apply to become an Australian citizen by descent if:

  • you were born outside Australia, and
  • one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth.

If your Australian citizen parent was a citizen by descent then that parent must have spent at least two years in Australia.

If you were born outside Australia or New Guinea before 26 January 1949 you may be eligible if:

  • at least one or your parents became an Australian citizen on 26 January 1949; and
  • that parent was born in Australia or New Guinea, or was naturalised in Australia before your birth.

All applicants aged 18 years and over must be of good character.

Children

Applications for children under 16 years of age must be made by a parent or legal guardian.
